A file that won't open — a corrupted Word document, a broken video, a photo that shows as garbled, a Zip that won't extract — is one of the most frustrating forms of data trouble. The reassuring news is that many corrupted files are repairable, because the data is often intact and only the file's structure or header is damaged. The trick is using the right tool for the file type. Here are 20 of the best file repair tools for 2026, organised by category, plus the honest limits of file repair and when the real problem is your drive.
From the engineers at CBL Data Recovery Singapore — because a corrupted file isn't always a lost one.
First: repair vs recovery
An important distinction. File repair fixes a file that exists but won't open — the data is there but the structure is damaged. Data recovery gets back a file that's gone — deleted or lost. This guide is about repair. If your file was deleted or lost, see our deleted file recovery guide first. And if files keep corrupting, the real culprit may be a failing drive — more on that below.

Built-in repair tools (start here — free)
Before third-party tools, many programs have built-in repair:
- Microsoft Office "Open and Repair" — in the Open dialog, click the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair, for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Excel's built-in recovery — Excel can often recover data from a corrupted workbook automatically or via Open and Repair.
- CHKDSK / First Aid — repairs file-system errors that cause corruption (use with care on a healthy drive).
- WinRAR / 7-Zip repair — WinRAR's "Repair archive" and 7-Zip's testing can fix or extract from damaged archives.
- VLC Media Player — plays and repairs many damaged video files, including a built-in AVI fix.

The honest limits of file repair
Being straight helps: repair tools fix damaged structure, not missing data. If the file's actual content was overwritten or is absent (for example, a video recovered from a card that was partly overwritten), no repair tool can rebuild what isn't there. Repair works best when the data is intact and only the header, index, or structure is damaged. Also, always work on a copy of the corrupted file, so a failed repair attempt doesn't make things worse — and check that a "repaired" file is genuinely complete before relying on it.
When the real problem is your drive
Here's a crucial point: if files keep corrupting, the culprit is often a failing drive developing bad sectors, not the files themselves. Repairing individual files won't fix that — and continuing to use a failing drive corrupts more data. If you see repeated corruption alongside slowdowns, errors, or noises, check the drive's SMART health and back up immediately.
If files keep getting corrupted, don't just repair them one by one — suspect the drive. Continued use of a failing drive corrupts more data and risks total loss. Back up now and get the drive assessed. See our hard drive recovery service.
When to call a lab
Call a lab when files are corrupting because the drive is failing, when corrupted files are irreplaceable and repair tools can't fix them, or when the storage is damaged or not detected. Labs recover data from failing drives and can handle corruption tied to hardware — the root cause repair tools can't address.
