The good news is genuinely good: digital camera photos are among the most recoverable data there is, because memory cards behave very differently from phones and SSDs. Why camera photos are so recoverable
When you delete or format photos on a camera's SD or CF card, the images usually aren't erased — the card simply marks that space as free, and the photos remain until new shots overwrite them. Crucially, memory cards don't run TRIM the way phones and SSDs do, so deleted photos linger far longer and are much more retrievable. That's the key advantage: a formatted or "deleted" camera card is frequently recoverable in full, provided you stop shooting immediately.

Common ways camera photos are lost
- Accidental deletion of individual images or a whole folder in-camera.
- Formatting the card by mistake, or reformatting after transferring, before realising some shots weren't copied.
- "Card error" or "card cannot be read" messages from file-system corruption.
- Interrupted writes — removing the card or a flat battery mid-save, which corrupts images or the card structure.
- Physical card damage — a snapped, bent or water-damaged card.
- Card wear or failure — an old, heavily-used or counterfeit card failing.
Most of these are logical and highly recoverable. Physical damage and genuine card failure are the exceptions that may need a lab.
How to recover deleted camera photos (step by step)
1. Stop shooting immediately. This is the single most important step. The moment you notice photos are missing, stop taking pictures with that card — every new shot risks overwriting the images you want back.
2. Remove the card and use a card reader. Don't try to recover in-camera. Power off, remove the card, and connect it to a computer using a card reader. This lets recovery software read it safely.
3. Set the physical write-protect switch (if present). On SD cards, sliding the lock switch prevents any accidental writes to the card during recovery — a simple safeguard.
4. Run photo recovery software. Use reputable software — Recuva, Disk Drill, PhotoRec, or Stellar Photo Recovery — to scan the card. These tools recover JPEG, RAW (CR2/CR3, NEF, ARW and more), and video formats by signature. Recover the photos to your computer, never back to the card.
5. Verify the recovered images. Open the recovered photos to confirm they're intact — recovery can occasionally retrieve a partly-overwritten, corrupted image, so check before you assume you're done.
6. Only reformat the card afterward — once your photos are safely recovered and you've confirmed the card is physically healthy.

Recovering from a corrupted or "card error" message
If the camera or computer says the card is corrupted or unreadable, don't let it reformat the card if you want the photos. Corruption usually means a damaged file system with the images still intact underneath. Connect the card to a computer with a reader and run recovery software directly on it — tools like PhotoRec recover images by signature even when the file system is unreadable. Formatting first would build an empty structure over your photos and hurt your chances.
When the card is physically damaged
Software can't help a card that's physically broken — snapped, cracked, bent, water-damaged, or completely unrecognised by any reader. In those cases, the data may still live on the memory chip, but reaching it requires chip-level recovery in a lab: reading the raw NAND and reconstructing the images. Don't force a damaged card into readers repeatedly — that can worsen the damage.

When to call a lab
For a physically damaged card, a card not recognised by any reader, or irreplaceable professional photos you can't risk on DIY, a lab is the safe choice. A note for RAW shooters
If you shoot RAW, there's good and cautionary news. The good: modern recovery tools support the major RAW formats — Canon CR2/CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fujifilm RAF and more — so recovered RAW files are usually fully editable, not just thumbnails. The cautionary: RAW files are large, so a card fills faster and overwriting happens sooner once you keep shooting — which makes the "stop immediately" rule even more critical. If your card also stored in-camera JPEGs alongside the RAW files, recovery software will typically retrieve both. And because RAW files carry all your editing latitude, they're exactly the images worth stopping everything to protect — one overwritten frame of an irreplaceable shoot is one too many. A few habits make photo loss rare:
- Offload photos regularly to your computer and a backup, rather than letting a card fill up over months.
