If your WD My Passport has stopped appearing on your Mac, do one thing before anything else: stop using it. Unplug it. Every repeated plug-in cycle, every attempted fix and every recovery app you install gives a failing drive another opportunity to lose more of your files.
Most My Passport drives that vanish from macOS fall into one of two groups. Either the drive inside has developed a fault, or the USB electronics that let it speak to your Mac have failed. From the outside the two look almost identical, and the wrong response to one can destroy your chances with the other. This guide explains how to tell them apart safely, why the common internet advice about pulling the drive out of its casing does not work on a My Passport, and which actions to avoid completely.
The first ten minutes: what to do now
- Listen before you touch anything. If the drive clicks, beeps, chirps, grinds, or sits completely silent with no faint vibration, unplug it now and do not power it on again. Noise means a mechanical fault, and every further minute of spinning can cost you files.
- Change the cable, then the port. Micro-USB and USB-C cables fail more often than drives do. Use a known good cable and plug straight into the Mac, not through a hub, dock or monitor. Bus-powered 2.5in drives are sensitive to under-powered ports.
- Test on one other computer, briefly. If the drive is invisible on a second Mac or a Windows PC as well, the fault is in the drive or its enclosure, not in your Mac.
- Refuse the Initialise prompt. When macOS says the disk is not readable by this computer, it offers Initialise, Ignore and Eject. Choose Ignore or Eject. Initialise opens Disk Utility ready to erase.
- Then stop. Two or three careful attempts is the sensible limit. Repeated power cycling is what turns a fully recoverable drive into a partial recovery.
If the volume does mount, even for a few seconds, do not run a backup or clone the whole disk. Copy the irreplaceable files first, in small batches, onto a different disk. A drive that mounts intermittently is telling you it is close to failing outright.
Is it the drive, or is it the enclosure?
A My Passport is really two devices in one shell: a 2.5in hard drive, and the USB bridge electronics that translate between that drive and your Mac. Either part can fail on its own.
Points towards the enclosure or bridge: the drive spins up normally and you can feel a gentle vibration, there is no unusual noise, but nothing appears anywhere on the Mac. Or it appears one time in five, disconnects halfway through a copy, or only works on one particular cable or port.
Points towards the drive itself: clicking, beeping, buzzing or no spin-up at all. Or the drive is recognised but reports the wrong capacity, takes minutes to list a folder, or freezes Finder into a spinning beachball.
Be honest about the overlap. A dying bridge and a dying drive can look the same from your desk, which is why guessing is expensive. In our Singapore laboratory the drive is read on controlled hardware that can talk to it without letting macOS write anything back, so the question is settled before any work is proposed. Why you cannot simply shuck a My Passport
Forum advice usually arrives within one reply: open the case, pull the bare drive out, drop it into an ordinary SATA enclosure. On a modern My Passport this does not work, for two separate reasons.
There is often no SATA connector to use. On most current My Passport models the USB port is soldered directly onto the drive's own circuit board. There is no SATA interface behind it to plug into.
Hardware encryption is always switched on. My Passport drives encrypt everything written to the platters, using key material held in the USB bridge electronics. This happens whether or not you ever opened WD Security and set a password. Connect the bare drive to a SATA port and what comes back is encrypted data, not your holiday photos.
Three practical consequences follow. Keep the original board and casing with the drive, never discard them. Do not swap in a board harvested from another My Passport, because the key material and drive-specific settings are unique to your unit. And do not cut, bend or force the connector while opening the shell.
One honest limit, stated plainly: if you set a WD Security password and have forgotten it, that password is required. Nobody can read the volume without it, and we will not pretend otherwise. The same applies to a FileVault-encrypted volume, or to a BitLocker-protected disk from the Windows side of the house: the owner's own password or recovery key is the only way in.
What Disk Utility is telling you
Open Disk Utility from Applications → Utilities, then choose View → Show All Devices. This step matters. The default view hides physical devices and lists only mountable volumes, so a drive that is present but unmountable looks like it is missing entirely.
Nothing appears in the sidebar at all
Hold Option, open the Apple menu → System Information, and look under USB. If the My Passport is listed there, the bridge is enumerating and the fault lies deeper, usually with the drive behind it. If it is absent from USB as well, suspect the cable, the port, the bridge electronics or a drive that is not spinning up.
The physical device is listed, but the volume is missing or greyed out
This is the more hopeful category. The drive is talking; the partition map, the container or the file system is damaged. Your files are very likely still on the platters. They stay that way only if nothing now writes over them.
It appears with the wrong capacity or an odd name
A drive reporting a fraction of its real size, or showing as an unnamed generic device, often indicates the drive has dropped into a protective mode or that its internal firmware area is damaged. That is laboratory work, not something software can address.
It mounts, then disappears mid-copy
Classic behaviour of unstable heads or a deteriorating surface. Every retry costs you readable sectors.
Run First Aid once at most. First Aid runs a file system check that writes to the disk. On a drive with weak heads or bad sectors, each pass drags the heads back across damaged areas and can overwrite the very metadata a laboratory would use to rebuild the file system. If it fails once, stop there.
APFS, exFAT and format problems on macOS
My Passport drives are usually sold preformatted for Windows, and plenty of Singapore users reformat them for Time Machine or general Mac use. Each format fails in its own way.
- exFAT has no journal. Unplug the drive mid-write, or lose power, and the directory structures can be left inconsistent. macOS then declares the disk unreadable even though every file is still physically present.
- NTFS mounts read-only on macOS without a third-party driver. If such a driver was installed and later broken by a macOS update, or removed, the drive can stop mounting the way you expect.
- APFS uses a container structure. When container metadata is damaged, Disk Utility may show the physical disk and even the container while offering no usable volume. APFS on a spinning external disk is less forgiving of unsafe ejection than the old Mac OS Extended format was.
- Mixed-up partition maps are common on drives moved between Windows and Mac, particularly where one machine has already been allowed to initialise the disk.
The important point is that all of these are logical faults, and logical faults are usually recoverable, right up until someone reformats or initialises the drive. A new format writes fresh metadata over the old structures, which is precisely what a file recovery job depends on to reconstruct your folders. Clicking or beeping means stop, not try harder
Sound is the clearest signal a drive can give you, and it always means the same thing: power it down.
- Regular clicking or ticking, once every second or two, usually means the head assembly cannot locate its position data and keeps resetting. Each cycle risks damaging the platter surface.
- Soft beeping or chirping generally means the motor is trying to start and failing, or the heads are stuck. The drive is drawing power and achieving nothing.
- Whining, buzzing, or silence with no vibration points to a motor that is not turning.
- Scraping or grinding is the worst case: media damage happening in real time. Seconds matter.
No software addresses any of this. Do not install recovery tools, do not run First Aid, do not put the drive in the freezer, and do not tap it against the desk. A physically damaged drive is opened in a cleanroom, and head-stack work, motor work or board-level work is carried out for one purpose only: to make the media readable long enough to take a sector-by-sector image. You receive your recovered files, not a repaired device. That is what hard drive recovery and WD drive recovery actually involve.

What not to do, and what happens next
The short list of actions that most often turn a recoverable My Passport into a lost one:
- Do not click Initialise, Erase or Format, on any machine.
- Do not run First Aid over and over hoping for a different result.
- Do not leave Time Machine attempting backups to a failing disk.
- Do not run consumer recovery software on a drive that is making noise, and never write recovered output back onto the same drive.
- Do not open the casing, remove the board, or fit a board from another unit.
- Do not throw away the enclosure, the original board or the cable.
- Do not keep giving it one more try. Repeated attempts are cumulative damage.
When you bring the drive in, bring the casing and the cable with it, and tell us what happened immediately before it stopped working: a fall, a power cut, an unplug mid-copy, a macOS update, or simply nothing at all. That history shapes the diagnosis.
