A Seagate external drive that will not spin up is one of the more unnerving things to hold in your hand. There is no click, no whirr, no vibration at all. The light may glow, the computer may show nothing, and it is very tempting to keep plugging it in to see whether this time is different.

Please do not. Silence usually means the mechanics or the power circuit inside the drive have failed, and every further attempt to start it is another chance for that failure to become permanent. Unplug it, leave it unplugged, and read the rest of this page before you touch it again. The good news, in most silent-drive cases, is that the platters holding your files are untouched. What has failed is the machinery around them.

What to do in the first ten minutes

The order matters more than the effort. Nothing on this list requires tools or technical skill, and none of it makes the drive worse.

  1. Disconnect the drive from the computer and from the mains. If it is a 3.5in desktop model with its own power adapter, unplug that too.
  2. Write down what happened. Was it knocked or dropped? Was it moved while it was running? Did the power flicker or the adapter get swapped? Did it work fine yesterday? The history of a failure changes what a laboratory does in the first hour of work, and it is the one piece of information nobody else can supply.
  3. Make one careful test, not ten. Try a known-good cable and a different port. If the drive is bus powered, plug it straight into the computer rather than through a hub or dock. If it is mains powered, try another socket, and only ever the correct adapter for that model. If it is still silent after one honest attempt, stop.
  4. Do not install recovery software. A drive that never spins cannot be read by software of any kind. Downloading a scanning tool changes nothing except the time you spend on it.
  5. Leave the enclosure closed. Opening the case does not make a seized drive spin, and on several Seagate portable ranges the drive inside is tied to the enclosure's own board.

What "will not spin" actually means

"Will not spin" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Underneath it sit four or five quite different faults, and they are not equally serious. This is what the silence usually points to.

You cannot tell these apart from the outside, and that is the point. A drive with a dead bridge board and a drive with seized heads look and sound exactly the same on your desk. They need completely different work.

Silent is not the same as clicking

People often assume silence is the worse of the two. Usually it is not.

A clicking drive is a drive whose motor is turning and whose heads are moving, seeking, failing to find what they need and resetting to try again. That cycle repeats several times a second, with the heads travelling over a surface they may already be damaging. Every second of power to a clicking drive costs you something. A silent drive is different. Nothing is moving, so nothing is being scratched while it sits there. The damage in a non-spinning drive tends to happen in bursts, at the moment of each start attempt, rather than continuously. That is why the advice is so blunt: the fewer start attempts, the more of your data survives. Silence buys you time, but only if you stop giving the drive power.

Why one more power cycle costs you files

Every time you plug in a drive with seized heads, the spindle motor applies torque to platters that will not turn freely. One of three things happens. The heads stay stuck and the motor gives up, which is the harmless outcome. The heads tear free and slide, taking a strip of magnetic coating with them. Or a head suspension bends, so that even after the mechanism is freed the head no longer flies correctly and cannot read.

The third outcome is the expensive one, because loose coating debris does not stay in one place. Once it is circulating inside a sealed drive it damages other surfaces, and a job that was straightforward becomes a slow, partial recovery.

Electrical faults behave the same way. If a component on the board has shorted, every reconnection pushes current through damaged circuitry. That is how a simple board fault turns into a burnt preamplifier inside the sealed housing, or destroys the small chip carrying the drive's own adaptive settings. Losing that chip does not make recovery impossible, but it adds work that would not have been needed if the drive had been left alone after the first failure.

Ten attempts across an evening is not persistence. It is ten separate opportunities for a recoverable fault to become an unrecoverable one.

The freezer myth, and the rest of the internet's advice

Search for this problem and you will find the same handful of suggestions, repeated confidently by people who never had to open the drive afterwards. Here is why each one is a bad idea.

The freezer

Do not put the drive in the freezer. The theory is that chilling the metal contracts it enough to free stuck heads or a tight motor. What actually happens is condensation. Bring cold metal back into Singapore's humidity and moisture forms on every surface, including inside the housing once the drive's own pressure filter has done its job. Moisture on a platter is a scratch waiting for the next spin-up, and the corrosion it starts continues long after the drive is dry to the touch. Even in the rare case where a frozen drive spins briefly, it spins with heads flying over a contaminated surface. Any lab receiving a drive afterwards has more damage to work around, not less.

Tapping, shaking, or a short drop

The idea is to shock the heads loose. In practice you are applying an uncontrolled force to a head assembly that is already resting on the data. It works occasionally, and when it fails it fails permanently.

Swapping the board from an identical drive

Buying the same model on a marketplace and moving the circuit board across is the most common piece of advice online and one of the most damaging. Modern drives store calibration values unique to the individual unit on the board itself. Fitting a donor board without transferring those values usually gives you a drive that still will not spin, and can leave the heads in a worse position than before.

Higher-power cables and universal adapters

Feeding more current into a board that has shorted does not overcome the fault. It burns more of the board. Using an adapter with the wrong voltage or polarity on a 3.5in desktop unit is one of the quickest ways to convert a minor fault into a serious one.

There is no home remedy for a drive that will not spin, because every one of these faults sits behind a housing that has to be opened in filtered air. This is genuinely cleanroom territory, and that is not a sales line. It is why the list above is a list of things not to do.

What a laboratory actually does with a non-spinning Seagate

Work begins with a free diagnosis. The drive is examined electrically first, before any attempt is made to start it, so that a board or power fault is identified without spinning anything. If the fault is inside the sealed housing, the drive is opened in our own in-house cleanroom on our own premises. Nothing is sent overseas.

From there the work depends on what the silence was hiding:

  • Stuck heads are lifted clear of the platter surface under magnification, using tooling made for that job, so the platters are never dragged.
  • A seized spindle may require the platter pack to be transferred to a working chassis, keeping the alignment between platters intact.
  • Board-level work means restoring the power path and, where necessary, moving the drive's own adaptive data across so that it stays the same drive electrically.
  • Head-stack work uses matching donor parts, which we hold in stock in-house rather than waiting on a supplier abroad.

All of this physical work has one purpose only: to make the media readable long enough to be imaged. The drive is then read sector by sector to a separate destination, with the read strategy adjusted so that difficult areas are left until the healthy majority is safely captured. Every later step, including file repair and rebuilding folder structures, happens on that image rather than on your original drive. You receive your recovered files, not a repaired device. The drive itself is a patient, not the deliverable.

You then see the list of recovered files and confirm it before paying anything. Media is handled in line with Singapore's PDPA, and an NDA is available on request if the contents are commercially sensitive.

One honest limit. If the volume was encrypted, whether by BitLocker, by a hardware-encrypting enclosure or by Seagate's own password feature, the recovered data still needs your own password or key to be readable. Frequently Asked Questions

The light comes on but the drive never spins. Does that mean it still has power?+
Not necessarily. On most external units the light is driven by the USB bridge board, so it can glow while the drive itself receives nothing. A lit indicator with total silence is one of the classic signs of a power path fault, either in the enclosure or on the drive's own circuit board.
Can I take the drive out of its case and connect it directly, or put it in a new enclosure?+
We would advise against it. On several Seagate portable models the drive has no standard connector and the bridge board is bound to the data, so removing it can leave the contents unreadable even with a working drive. If the fault turns out to be mechanical, you will also have handled a fragile drive unnecessarily.
Does the freezer trick ever work?+
Occasionally a chilled drive will spin for a few seconds, which is why the story persists. What is not reported is the condensation left inside the housing afterwards, which causes scratching and corrosion on the platters. It reduces what can be recovered and makes the eventual laboratory work harder, so the honest answer is do not do it.
