If your Seagate external drive has stopped appearing on your Mac, the single most useful thing you can do is slow down. Unplug it. Leave it unplugged. Do not sit there plugging and unplugging it a dozen times hoping it catches.
Most Seagate drives that go missing on macOS fall into two very different groups. In the first, the drive itself is fine and the problem sits in the cable, the port, the enclosure electronics or the file system. Those cases cost nothing to test and are often solved in ten minutes. In the second, the mechanism inside is failing, and every extra minute of power makes the recovery harder and more expensive.
The checks below are ordered so that everything free and harmless happens first, and so you learn to recognise the point at which continuing on your own starts destroying your chances.
Do the free checks first, in this order
Work through these one at a time. Stop immediately if the drive makes any repeating mechanical noise, and skip to the section on sounds further down.
- Change the cable. This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Seagate portable drives are bus powered, so a cable that charges your phone perfectly may still not carry enough clean power and data for a spinning drive. Borrow a known-good cable of the correct type.
- Change the port, and go direct. Plug straight into the Mac. Remove hubs, docks, monitor pass-through ports and USB-C dongles from the chain. Underpowered hubs are the second most common cause we see.
- Try a second computer. Another Mac, or even a Windows machine, tells you whether the fault travels with the drive or stays with the Mac. If it appears elsewhere, your problem is on the Mac side.
- Look in System Information. Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then USB or Thunderbolt in the sidebar. If the Seagate is listed there but not in the Finder, the hardware is talking and the problem is the file system or the partition map. That is a very different, and usually much better, situation than nothing appearing at all.
- Check Finder preferences. Under Finder → Settings → General and Sidebar, confirm that external disks are set to show. Occasionally a drive is mounted and working, and simply invisible.
Those five steps cost nothing and risk nothing. If the drive is still missing after all five, stop guessing and read on.
Know which Seagate is on your desk
The family matters, because the failure patterns differ.

If yours is a desktop model with its own power brick, test the adapter before anything else. A dead adapter looks exactly like a dead drive, and it is the cheapest fix in this article.
One more point on the One Touch range. Some units were set up with Seagate's password protection through its desktop software. If that was switched on, the contents are encrypted, and they cannot be read without the owner's own password. No laboratory can get around that, and any company telling you otherwise is not being straight with you. The same honesty applies to Mac volumes protected with FileVault: we need your password or recovery key, or the data stays unreadable.
What Disk Utility is actually telling you
Open Disk Utility, then choose View → Show All Devices. This matters. The default view hides the physical device and shows only mountable volumes, so a drive with a damaged partition map can look completely absent when it is in fact right there.
Read the result carefully:
- Nothing listed at all. The Mac cannot see the device. Combined with a silent drive, this usually points at the cable, the enclosure board or the power supply. Combined with an audible drive, it points at the mechanism.
- Device listed, volume greyed out. The hardware is communicating but macOS cannot mount the file system. This is often recoverable, and the data is frequently intact underneath.
- Device listed with no volume beneath it. The partition information is damaged or gone. Do not repartition. The files are usually still on the platters.
- "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". Choose Ignore, never Initialise. Initialise writes a fresh, empty structure over the map of where your files live.
First Aid deserves a warning. On a drive that is electrically healthy but logically muddled, First Aid is reasonable and often helps. On a drive with any mechanical fault, First Aid hammers the same damaged areas over and over, and each pass can turn a difficult recovery into an impossible one. Run it once, at most, and only on a silent drive. If it fails, do not run it again.
exFAT, APFS and the format trap
Seagate externals usually ship formatted exFAT or NTFS so they work out of the box on Windows. If yours has never been reformatted, macOS will happily read exFAT but not write to NTFS without extra software.
exFAT is convenient and genuinely fragile. It keeps a single file allocation structure with limited redundancy, so an unplug during a write, a power dip on a bus-powered drive, or a Mac going to sleep mid-copy can leave the volume unmountable while every byte of your data is still physically present. That is why a drive can appear one day and be gone the next with nothing dramatic having happened.
APFS and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) are more resilient day to day, but neither is a backup and neither survives a failing mechanism. If the drive is a Time Machine destination, remember that a Time Machine sparsebundle is a container: when the container will not mount, individual backups inside it are not simply browsable, and this is exactly the moment people discover their only copy was the backup.
The trap to avoid is this. When a volume will not mount, macOS is very good at suggesting you erase and reformat. Reformatting always produces a working drive. It does not produce your files. Spinning, clicking, beeping: the sounds that mean stop
Put the drive to your ear in a quiet room, power it once, and listen for about ten seconds. What you hear is the most reliable free diagnostic available to you.
- Normal spin-up, then quiet. The motor is turning and the heads have settled. Your problem is more likely to be the cable, the bridge electronics or the file system. Continue with the checks above.
- Repeating click, roughly once a second. The heads are failing to find their reference position and retrying. Power off now. Every retry can drag a damaged head across the surface. This needs a cleanroom, not another cable.
- Beeping. A soft electronic beep usually means the motor is trying to start and cannot, often because the heads are stuck on the platter surface. Repeated attempts risk scoring the platters. Power off.
- Buzzing, whining or a grinding scrape. Stop immediately. Grinding in particular can mean surface damage in progress.
- Complete silence on a portable model. Could be a dead cable, a dead bridge board, or a seized motor. Silence is ambiguous, which is precisely why it is worth having looked at rather than guessed at.
The rule is simple. Noise that repeats is the drive telling you it cannot do the thing you are asking. Turning it off costs you nothing. Leaving it running can cost you the recovery. Our page on Seagate data recovery covers what happens next for mechanically damaged units.
What not to do, however tempting
Almost every unrecoverable case that arrives at our laboratory was made worse by something well intentioned.
- Do not put the drive in the freezer. This piece of internet folklore is thirty years out of date and, on a modern drive, condensation on the platters is an excellent way to end the job permanently.
- Do not keep replugging. Each power cycle on a failing mechanism is another set of retries across damaged surfaces.
- Do not run scanning or recovery software on a noisy drive. Deep scans read the entire surface. That is the worst possible workload for a drive with a head problem, and it can convert a recoverable case into scrap in under an hour.
- Do not open the enclosure or the drive. Many Seagate portables use a board with the USB connector built directly onto the drive, so there is no plain SATA drive inside to rescue, and pulling it apart usually just damages the connector. Opening the sealed drive itself outside a cleanroom contaminates the platters within seconds.
- Do not accept "Initialise", "Erase" or "Repartition". Not once, not to see what happens.
- Do not write anything new to the drive. If it does mount briefly, copy your most important files off first, in order of value, and do not use that window to reorganise, defragment or install software onto it.
If the drive mounts intermittently, treat that as a countdown, not a reprieve. Copy what matters most while you can, and stop when it disappears again.
When it is time to bring it to a laboratory
Bring the drive in when any of these are true: it clicks or beeps, it is silent and a known-good cable and port change nothing, Disk Utility shows the device but no usable volume, or the files on it are irreplaceable and you are no longer confident about your next step.
