If you have just found an old hard drive in a drawer, a storeroom box, or among a relative's belongings, and you believe the only copies of your family photos are on it, the most useful thing you can do right now is nothing at all. Leave it switched off. Do not connect it to a USB dock just to check whether it still works.
A drive that has been sitting unpowered for five, ten or fifteen years often has one reliable spin-up left in it. Whether that spin-up happens on a kitchen table or on controlled equipment in a laboratory frequently decides whether the photos come back. This guide explains why, what commonly goes wrong with long-dormant drives, and how to handle a drive that came from someone who has passed away.
Do this first: leave the drive switched off
Put the drive somewhere dry and at room temperature, ideally in an anti-static bag or the box it arrived in. Singapore humidity is not kind to exposed circuit boards and connector pins, so a sealed bag with the desiccant sachet from a shoebox is better than an open shelf.
Then write down what you know, while you still remember it. This information genuinely shapes the diagnosis:
- Which computer it came out of, and roughly what year that computer was bought.
- Whether it ran Windows, macOS or something older.
- Whether the machine was working when it was last shut down, or whether it had already failed.
- Any noises you remember: clicking, beeping, grinding, or a drive that simply went silent.
- Whether anyone has already tried anything. A USB dock, recovery software, a shop, a helpful nephew. Say so honestly. It changes what we do first, and hiding it only costs you.
Then bring it in with the power still off. Diagnosis is free and you receive a fixed written quote before any work begins, so there is no cost to finding out where you stand. If it is easier, describe what you have through our contact form first.
Why drives that have sat for years fail on the very first spin-up
A hard drive is a mechanical device built to fine tolerances with a small amount of lubricant inside, and it does not enjoy sitting still for a decade. Three things go wrong most often with long-dormant drives.
Stiction. On older drives the read/write heads park on a landing zone on the platter surface itself, rather than on a ramp at the outer edge as modern drives do. Over years of stillness, the head and the lubricant film on the platter can effectively bond together. When power is applied, the spindle motor is trying to turn against heads that are stuck fast. Sometimes it wins and the drive spins up normally. Sometimes it does not, and you hear a faint whirr, a low buzz, or nothing.
Seized spindle motors. The bearing grease in the motor thickens and settles when a drive is never turned. The motor then draws current, stalls, and the drive's own electronics shut it down to protect themselves. From the outside this looks identical to a completely dead drive, which is why so many people conclude wrongly that the disk is beyond hope.
Aged electronics and materials. Capacitors on the controller board degrade, rubber bump stops inside can turn sticky, and contacts corrode. Any of these can stop a mechanically sound drive from ever spinning.
None of this means the photos have gone. The magnetic data on the platters is durable and does not simply fade away over a decade in a cupboard. The whole problem is getting the drive into a state where it can be read once, safely, so that the contents can be copied off. Where mechanical work is needed, such as head-stack work, board-level work, or fitting donor parts we hold in stock in-house, it is done only to make the media readable long enough to image it. You receive your recovered files, not a repaired device.
The first power-on is the most important one
This is the part most people do not know, and it is the reason this article opens by telling you to do nothing.
If the heads are stuck to the platter surface and you keep applying power, every attempt is the motor trying to drag them loose by brute force. That can bend the head suspension, shear the heads off the arm, or drag them across the exact surface your photos are recorded on. A drive that would have released its data on the first attempt can become a genuinely difficult job by the sixth.
The damaging sequence is a familiar one. Plug it in, hear a click, unplug it, wait, try again, try a different cable, try a different computer, try the dock your friend lent you. Each cycle is another chance to convert a recoverable drive into a mechanically damaged one. The same applies to a drive that spins but is not detected: repeated power cycles while a weak head struggles will not improve matters.
In our own Singapore laboratory the first power-on is treated as a controlled event. The drive is brought up on equipment that monitors current draw and can cut power the instant the behaviour is wrong. The goal is never to boot the drive or browse it in Windows, but to take a sector-by-sector image of it onto clean storage. Everything after that, including reading the file system and pulling out the pictures, happens on the image while the original drive is set aside. That is the standard approach for any hard drive recovery job, and it matters most on drives that only have one good spin-up in them.
IDE, PATA, early SATA and drives from dead computers
Family photos from the era people most want back tend to live on interfaces that no longer exist on modern machines. Common finds include 3.5 inch IDE/PATA drives with a wide 40-pin ribbon connector and master/slave jumper blocks, 2.5 inch laptop IDE drives with the narrower 44-pin connector, and early SATA drives from the mid-2000s. We keep the controllers and adapters needed to read these, so an obsolete connector is not an obstacle.
Please resist buying a cheap USB-to-IDE adapter to test the drive at home. Many of them supply unstable power, some pass through commands that write to the disk, and a weak or ageing drive connected to one will often be declared dead when it is not. A false verdict from a five-dollar adapter has ended more than a few searches prematurely.
A dead computer also does not mean a dead drive. In a great many cases the power supply, motherboard, screen or battery failed while the drive inside is perfectly readable. If you are not comfortable opening an old desktop or laptop, bring the whole machine and we will take the drive out properly.
Two other details worth knowing. Drives from older Macs use the HFS+ file system, and the photos are often held inside an iPhoto or Aperture library rather than as loose folders, which needs handling correctly during Mac data recovery. And if your old drive lives inside a plastic desktop enclosure from that period, bring the enclosure and its power adapter along with it, because external hard drive recovery sometimes turns out to be a failed enclosure board rather than a failed disk.
What not to do with an old drive
Short list, and every item on it has cost someone their photos.
- Do not keep power-cycling it. If it clicks, buzzes or fails to spin, stop after the first attempt.
- Do not open the drive. The inside of a hard disk is not a serviceable space. A single dust particle on a platter is larger than the gap the heads fly at. Opening it in a room, a workshop or a garage turns a recoverable drive into scrap. Our cleanroom work is done in-house, on our own premises, for exactly this reason.
- Do not freeze it. The freezer trick circulates as folk wisdom and produces condensation on the platters. It does not fix stiction.
- Do not tap, shake or drop it to free the heads.
- Do not run disk-checking utilities. If Windows offers to scan and fix the drive, decline. If it asks to format or initialise the disk, decline. Both write to the very structures needed to locate your photos.
- Do not run recovery software on a drive that is making noise. Software cannot help a mechanical fault, and hours of scanning under load will make it worse.
- Do not install anything onto the drive you are trying to recover.
If the drive is mechanically healthy and the photos were simply deleted, emptied from a recycle bin, or lost when a partition was reformatted years ago, that is a different and generally more forgiving situation, covered under deleted file recovery. Even then, the rule about not writing anything further to the disk still stands.
Drives and computers left behind by a relative
A good share of the old drives brought to us arrive after a death in the family. It is rarely a technical errand for the person carrying it, and we try to treat it accordingly: quietly, without unnecessary questions about what is on the disk, and without an audience.
There is one practical point to raise early. Because we cannot tell from the outside who is entitled to the contents of someone else's drive, we may ask for proof that you are authorised to act. In practice that usually means a death certificate together with something showing your standing, such as a grant of probate, letters of administration, or evidence that you are the executor or immediate next of kin. If you are unsure what you have, bring what documents you hold and we will tell you whether it is enough. Everything is handled in line with Singapore's PDPA, and an NDA is available on request.
Please also be prepared for a limit that no laboratory can get around. If the drive was encrypted, whether with BitLocker, FileVault or a third-party tool, the data cannot be read without the owner's own password or recovery key. Nobody can bypass that, and you should be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. It is worth searching for a printed recovery key, a key saved to a Microsoft or Apple account, or a note in a password manager before assuming the worst. The same honesty applies to phones and tablets left behind: a device locked to an account is a matter for the vendor, not for a recovery laboratory.
One last thing families often forget to consider. An inherited drive usually holds more than photographs, including financial records, correspondence and documents nobody expected to read. We return the recovered files to you and what happens next is entirely your decision.
What to expect when you bring the drive in
The process is deliberately unexciting, because that is what protects the data.
- Free diagnosis. We assess the drive and, where it is safe to do so, bring it up on controlled equipment to establish what is actually wrong.
- Fixed written quote. You are told the price and what is realistically achievable before any work starts. Nothing proceeds without your approval.
- Stabilise, then image. If mechanical work is needed to make the media readable, it is done in our in-house cleanroom using donor parts held in stock. The drive is then imaged sector by sector onto clean storage.
- You see the file list. Before you pay, you are shown what has been recovered and you confirm your photos are in it. On standard cases, no recovery means no fee.
- You collect the files. Recovered data is delivered on a destination drive, either yours or one we supply. You receive your recovered files, not a repaired device, and we would gently suggest you keep two copies of them this time.
