If your camera has just shown Card Error, Card Cannot Be Used, No Images or Memory Card Locked, and a whole trip is sitting on that card, stop before you touch another button.
Switch the camera off. Take the card out. Do not press OK when the camera offers to format. Do not shoot one more frame to it, not even a test shot. Put the card back in its plastic case and set it somewhere safe.
That is the whole emergency procedure, and it takes about twenty seconds. Almost every card we see that has become genuinely unrecoverable was made worse after the error appeared, not by the error itself. The photos are usually still sitting on the memory. What destroys them is the next few things a worried owner does.
Do these four things right now
- Power the camera down and remove the card. A card that is misbehaving may be part-way through a write. Leaving it powered and in use invites more damage to the file structure.
- Slide the write-protect tab down on a full-size SD card. That little switch on the left edge tells card readers not to write to the card. It is not perfect protection, but it stops a lot of accidental damage from a computer that decides the card needs "fixing".
- Do not format, initialise or run any repair prompt, from the camera or from Windows or macOS. More on this below, because this is the single most costly mistake.
- Use a different card for the rest of the trip. Buy a cheap one at the airport if you have to. The corrupted card should not go back in a camera again.
If the photos matter, that is where the do-it-yourself part should stop. Nothing you do at home increases the chance of getting them back; several common actions reduce it permanently.
Why your camera asks you to format, and why the answer is no
Cameras are not diagnostic tools. A camera reads a small area of the card that describes where the pictures are: the file allocation tables and the directory entries. If that area does not make sense to the camera, the camera cannot tell the difference between "this card is damaged" and "this card is blank and needs setting up". So it offers the only thing it knows how to do, which is to format.
Formatting writes a fresh, empty filing system over the top of the old one. Your photos are not individually erased, but the index that says where each JPEG or RAW file starts and ends is thrown away, and new data is written into the exact area a laboratory would use to rebuild that index. Recovery after a format is still often possible, and we do it routinely, but you have made the job harder and the results are usually less complete. Filenames, folder structure and the order of the shoot are frequently lost even when the images themselves come back.
Windows does the same thing in a friendlier voice. If you insert the card into a PC and it says You need to format the disk before you can use it, or offers to scan and fix errors, decline both. The "scan and fix" option runs a filing-system check that writes its corrections directly onto the card, and it has no idea it is standing on your photographs.
"Card error" usually means logical damage, not a broken card
This is the part that should make you feel a little better. In a large share of the camera cards we see, the memory itself is fine and every photo is still physically present. What has broken is the bookkeeping.
Common causes are undramatic:
- The card was pulled out, or the battery died, while the camera was still writing a file or updating the directory.
- The card was moved between two cameras, or between a camera and a phone, and each rewrote the filing system slightly differently.
- The card was nearly full and a burst of RAW files was interrupted mid-write.
- The card was ejected from a laptop without safely removing it first.
- The card is a counterfeit or a very cheap unbranded one that reported a larger capacity than it actually has, and has now started overwriting its own beginning.
In these cases the images sit untouched in the memory and the work is to reconstruct the map, or to identify the file signatures directly and carve the images out of the raw data. Genuinely physical faults do happen too: a cracked card, a controller chip that has failed, a snapped contact, a card that went through the wash or into the sea. Those need work at board level, but they are the minority of holiday-photo cases. Free recovery apps are the second thing that goes wrong
The instinct after a card error is to search for free photo recovery software. Some of these tools are competent. The danger is not usually the scanning; it is everything around it.
Three specific risks are worth understanding:
- Tools that write to the card. Anything offering to "repair", "fix" or "rebuild" the card is modifying the only copy of your photos you have left. A recovery tool should read the card and write its output somewhere else entirely. If a program asks you to save recovered files back to the same card, close it.
- Recovering to the same card. Even a read-only scanner becomes destructive the moment you save the results onto the source. Each recovered file lands on top of files not yet recovered.
- Half-finished results that feel like success. Free tools very often return thumbnails, previews or truncated JPEGs that open but are 160 pixels wide, or RAW files with the header intact and the image data missing. People see a grid of pictures, assume the job is done, reformat the card, and only later discover the files are unusable. By then the original is gone.
There is also a quieter cost. Every scan cycles the card, and a card with a struggling controller may have a limited number of good reads left in it. Spending those attempts on a consumer utility means fewer available when someone is imaging it properly. If you have already run a tool, that is not a disaster and it is worth saying so when you bring the card in, but stop there rather than trying a fourth and fifth program.
SD, microSD and CFexpress do not fail the same way
The advice above applies to all of them, but the internals differ and so does the work involved.

One honest limit worth stating plainly. If a microSD card was adopted as internal storage by an Android phone, it is encrypted, and the key lives on that phone rather than on the card. Without the phone or the owner's own key, nobody can read it, and no laboratory can bypass that. The same principle applies to any encrypted media: we work with the owner's password or key, never around it. What a laboratory actually does with a corrupted card
The process is deliberately conservative, and the first principle is that the original card is never worked on directly.
- Free diagnosis. The card is examined on a write-blocked reader to see whether the controller responds, what the filing system looks like, and whether the fault is logical or physical.
- Imaging. A sector-by-sector image is taken, with retries on the areas that read poorly. From that point onward everything happens on the copy. If the card degrades further, the image is already safe.
- Reconstruction. Where the directory survives, it is rebuilt. Where it does not, images are carved out by file signature and matched to camera-specific RAW structures, then verified by actually opening them rather than trusting a file listing.
- Board-level work where needed. For a physically damaged card, work on contacts or components is done in our own in-house cleanroom facility in Singapore, purely to make the memory readable long enough to take an image. You receive your recovered files, not a working card. Nothing is sent overseas.
- You check the list before you pay. We show you what came back, folder by folder, and you confirm the photos you care about are there. On standard cases it is no recovery, no fee.

Bringing the card in, and protecting the next trip
Bring the card in its case. Bring the camera too if the error only appears in the camera, and mention anything that has already been tried, including formatting and any software you ran. None of that is judged; it simply tells us where to start.

Once the photos are back, a few habits make the next trip safer:
- Format cards in the camera that will use them, not in a computer, and do it before a trip rather than after.
- Retire cards on a schedule. Flash memory wears out, and a card that has been in a camera for five years owes you nothing.
- Buy from a reputable seller. Counterfeit high-capacity cards are common and they fail in exactly the way that costs you a holiday.
- Offload every night to a laptop or portable drive, and keep a second copy. Two copies on one drive is one copy. If that drive is your backup, our external hard drive recovery page is worth a read on why they fail too.
